São Tomé e Príncipe - Africa

São Tomé e Principe is a group of three islands, but the name of the country is given by the two largest. São Tomé is the largest, but to turn around (if it was possible, because there is no roads to go around the whole island), one would be necessary to drive less than 250 km. The Principe Island is far smaller and only a quarter part is inhabited. São Tomé has around 200,000 people and in oder hand the Principe island has only 15.000. The name o Principe island is because the King of Portugal gave the uninhabited island to his son, the principe. Only a century after the people went there, crossing 500 km of ocean. At the 19th century the islands became the greatest producer of cocoa in the world, turn in a rich colony of Portugal, sending money to build Luanda city in Angola and Maputo city in Mozambique. But in 1975, São Tomé e Principe became independent of Portugal. Without good managers and with corruption this so new Country became poor. Beside this poverty there is a Country that has 100% of alphabetization (structured by the Portugueses) and a very educated and kind people. A poor people, well educated but without dignity. The lack os dignity is the central point of the feeling of this people. Every year, at the children's day (the first day of class) all the children receive a brand new clothing and their's mothers take a so special care with their's hairs, with braids and beads of all kinds and colors. This is the day of Dignity! The day when each little girl can be a Princess in her own world.
